Computing Resource Center (CRC)
The CRC provides computer support and other services to undergraduate and graduate students who reside off-campus or in Sansom Place East and Sansom Place West. Support is available by telephone and email and in-person by appointment and during walk-in hours. The CRC's knowledgeable staff can help you with a wide-range issues including general questions, slow performance, virus and malware removal, software installations, and connecting your laptops and smartphones to AirPennNet.
Services Available at the CRC
Quick Check & System Evaluation
When you come to the CRC with a computer issue, staff will make every effort to resolve your problem as quickly as possible during a Quick Check. These initial evaluations are performed while you wait and generally take 20 minutes or less. Some problems can take longer to resolve, however, so staff may ask you to check-in your computer for a System Evaluation. The CRC will ensure that your computer is securely stored while the necessary work is performed and notify you when your system is ready for pick up.
A new service being offered this fall, System Tune-Up is a proactive service designed to keep your computer running as well as it can. Many serious computer problems can be avoided with routine maintenance. For more information, please see the System Tune-Up article.
CRC staff are available to help you get your mobile device connected to AirPennNet.
CRC customers can recycle their e-waste through the CRC for free! Computers, displays, keyboards, printers, toner and inkjet cartridges, and even compact fluorescent light bulbs and batteries can be brought to the CRC to be disposed of in an environmentally responsible way. Residents of Sansom Place East and Sansom Place West can bring eligible devices to the CRC to register them for AirPennNet-Device. For more information, please see the AirPennNet-Device article.
The CRC is located in Suite 202, Sansom Place West, 3650 Chestnut Street. The building's entrance is located off Steve Murray's Way (mid-block between 36th and 37th on Chestnut). Please be sure to bring your PennCard for access to the building.

2013/2014 Academic Year Minimum System Requirements
Computers serviced by the CRC must meet the following minimum system requirements for the 2013-2014 academic year:
- Windows Systems
Operating Systems: Windows 8, Windows 7 SP1 (Home Premium and above), or Windows Vista SP2 (Home Premium and above)
Memory: at least 2.0GB of RAM
- Mac Systems
Operating Systems: OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, OS X 10.7 Lion, or OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
Memory: at least 2.0GB of RAM
Hardware Repair Policy
The CRC does not provide hardware support to limit the risk of voiding vendor warranties. For hardware related issues, the CRC will provide guidance and referrals to either the appropriate vendor or a 3rd-party service provider located near campus.
Data Backup Policy
Prior to leaving their computer with the CRC for a System Evaluation, customers are responsible for backing up their own data *before* the unit can be signed in for service. Examples of services that could potentially impact your data include:
- Reinstallation of operating system software (may be required based on results of diagnostic testing performed by CRC staff)
- Format of a hard drive
- Installation of the manufacturer’s restore CD
Due to the our inability to verify the authenticity of copyrighted material, the CRC will *not* back up movie or music files under any circumstances. If you have questions or concerns about backing up your data, please contact the CRC for assistance.
A valid Penn ID is required for service.
